Gold still hopeful on SPL2 plan

SPL chief executive Lex Gold
Gold believes a second tier of the SPL is viable

Chief executive Lex Gold says he is confident proposals for a second tier of the SPL will be green lit.

Several Scottish Football League clubs, including Dundee, Livingston and St Johnstone, tried but failed to set up an SPL2 last year.

However, an arbitration panel is still to report its findings on the proposal.

Gold said: "I am pretty confident we will win, but that's not knowledge, that's on the basis that we believe our view on the position is right."

The Scottish Premier League chief was speaking after announcing his league's biggest television deal to date.

But he knows that some clubs in the SFL have yet to be convinced of the plan for a second tier.

"It does appear some of our colleagues in the Scottish Football League appear to be less keen on it and we are not going to be forcing anything on anyone that does not want it," he added.

"The aim will be that we will have another look at that. The clubs agreed that's the way we will take it forward once we know the outcome of the arbitration panel.

"It's in the hands of a tribunal at the moment."
