Weiss has opted to coach his country instead of Hearts

Hearts managerial candidate Vladimir Weiss has decided to accept the job as coach of Slovakia.

The former Artmedia Bratislava boss had held talks with the Edinburgh club about filling their managerial vacancy.

However, Weiss indicated he wished to await the outcome of discussions with his country's FA before committing to taking the reins at Tynecastle.

Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov has been urged to be more open about his decision making at the Edinburgh club.

Charlie Mann, former spokesperson for Romanov, told BBC Sport: "Vladimir wants less communication than there has been over the past few months.

Frail's time at Tynecastle appears to be over

Stephen Frail is expected to sever his ties with Hearts after being asked to stay away from the Edinburgh club's pre-season preparations.

Frail, a former defender at Tynecastle, has been the caretaker manager since January and has been on the coaching staff since October 2004.

Frail declined to comment and Hearts may make a statement next week.

Paul Quinn faces an anxious wait to discover if Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has stripped him of the club captaincy.

The 22-year-old defender was handed the armband following the death of Phil O'Donnell in December.

SPL clubs get Euro boost

Scotland's clubs will receive an extra place in the UEFA Cup in 2009/10, the Scottish Premier League have revealed.

Scotland will have at least four teams in European competition next season, and Hibernian would join Celtic, Rangers, Motherwell and Queen of the South if they qualify through the Intertoto Cup. There will be a guaranteed five the following season as the Intertoto Cup will be replaced with an additional qualifying round in the UEFA Cup.

SPL secretary Iain Blair said: "The UEFA Cup will start in June and participation is mandatory, whereas the Intertoto had previously been voluntary."

He added: "If a team don't want to start their season in June or early July, they no longer have a choice."

Scotland will retain its two Champions League slots and Blair revealed that the Scottish Cup winners will continue to enter the UEFA Cup in the round before the group stage.< ... Read more »
