Celtic won the Scottish title for the third successive season, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink rising to head home the winner on a tense final day.

Gordon Strachan became only the third Celtic manager to achieve such a feat after a single goal was enough to see off Dundee United.

Both sides were denied by some fine goalkeeping in a nervy game.

But, with Rangers losing to Aberdeen, Vennegoor of Hesselink's header sent Celtic three points clear at the top.

The two Glasgow rivals had gone into their final matches equal on points but with Celtic having the advantage on goal difference.

But Celtic were the form team having won their last six Scottish Premier League games to overhaul a faltering Rangers' lead - and had not lost in their last 12 visits to Tannadice.

United had an early chance to add to any Celtic nerves, only for Noel Hunt to drive the ball straight at goalkeeper Artur Boruc from the edge of the penalty box.

However, the home side's defence, missing Lee ... Read more »

Gordon Strachan's side travel to Dundee United, while Rangers visit Aberdeen.

Both Old Firm sides are locked on 86 points, with Celtic's goal difference four better off than their rivals.

Celtic captain Stephen McManus wants to win the title in memory of late coach Tommy Burns, while Gers boss Walter Smith has no regrets over the campaign.

Gordon Strachan is trying to steer Celtic to their third consecutive SPL crown, while Smith wants to add the title to the CIS Cup - with the Scottish Cup final against Queen of the South still to be played on Saturday and his side having also reached the Uefa Cup final, where they lost to Zenit St Petersburg.

The destination of the title will be decided at Tannadice and Pittodrie.

A win for both Old Firm clubs will see the title decided on goal difference.

Rangers triumphed on the final day of the season in 2003 and 2005 but Celtic's McManus is determined his side will be celebrating their third title in as many years.

Hearts interim manager Stevie Frail is to leave Tynecastle and will be replaced by a new boss as Hearts plan ahead for next season.

Frail was unavailable for comment on Wednesday, but BBC Sport can reveal that he is aware that a new managerial team is to be brought in.

Hearts, who finished the season in a disappointing eighth place, appointed Frail caretaker boss in January.

He had previously been in joint charge along with Anatoly Korobochka.

That followed the departure of first-team coach Valdas Ivanauskas in March 2007.

Mark McGhee has been widely tipped to take over at Hearts after leading Motherwell to third place in his first season at Fir Park.

But Well chairman John Boyle has said that he has had no approach from Hearts for his manager's services.

"I had dinner with Mark the other night and, if he's leaving, he never mentioned it to me," said Boyle.

"Hearts have made no approach and I'm pretty confident of keeping Mark for next season."

Steven Naismith is expected to be out of action for 12 months after having an operation to repair the damaged cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Team-mate Chris Burke is facing between four and six months out to recover from an ankle surgery.

Both players were injured during Rangers' Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone last month.

The medical team performing the operations say they are pleased with how the procedures went.

Naismith was injured in the first half of Rangers' penalty shoot-out win over St Johnstone after opposition midfielder Martin Hardie landed heavily on the striker's knee.

He followed Burke, who was substituted after only seven minutes when he was caught on the right ankle by Kevin Rutkiewicz.

However, at the end of April, Rangers announced that the winger was nearing full fitness and was close to a return to the first-team squad.
