Annan Athletic got off to a dream start by thrashing Cowdenbeath at Central Park in their first senior league game.

Paul McQuade had put the hosts in front after 16 minutes by chipping Craig Summersgill from the edge of the box.

Annan levelled on 29 minutes through a Mike Jack penalty when Kevin Neilson was impeded before Jack volleyed number two three minutes into the second half.

Steven Archibald's scrambled goal made it 3-1 and Darren Johnstone netted a fourth from just inside the area.

Crewe are set to swoop for long term target Clayton Donaldson from Hibs. The former York hit man is set to be named as Nicky Maynard's replacement following Maynard's move to Bristol City earlier in the week. Donaldson has been a long term target if Steve Holland's but has so far failed to capture his man due to Hibs' resistance to let Donaldson go. However, the 24 year old 'giant' has now been told he will be able to leave if the right offer came along. Donaldson moved up north in summer 2007 after a two year spell at York City, where he scored over 40 goals in 86 appearances. Donaldson, Bradford born, started his career at Hull City but only made a couple of appearances before leaving for York. His year at Hibs has been less than fruitful, with just 5 goals in 18 games.

We Must Improve

WALTER SMITH was disappointed with his side's performance against Liverpool this afternoon but feels that Rafa Benitez's team could now be in a position to challenge Chelsea and Manchester United for the Premiership title.

Goals from Fernando Torres, David Ngog, Yossi Benayoun and Xabi Alonso gave the Reds a comfortable victory at Ibrox and their second-half performance, in particular, was hugely impressive.

Smith admitted after the final whistle that their were not many positives to take from the game from Rangers perspective and that his players have to raise their standards before Tuesday night's massive Champions League qualifier against Kaunas.

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry
Henry is in Scotland with his Barcelona team-mates

France striker Thierry Henry believes Scotland have nothing to fear as they bid to reach the next World Cup.

The Scots beat France twice in the qualifying race for Euro 2008 but narrowly missed out on the finals.

And Henry said: "I think Scotland fans can get excited about World Cup qualifying because I don't see why you should be scared of any team.

"If you guys hadn't lost in Georgia it would have been really difficult for us to qual ... Read more »

Nacho Novo has called on Rangers to bring in a new midfielder to replace injured star Barry Ferguson.

Gers skipper Ferguson is set to miss the first three months of the season after undergoing ankle surgery earlier this month.

Novo admits losing Ferguson is a major blow to the side and he believes the Glasgow giants need to bring in a quality signing to provide cover for Ferguson.

"Barry is a right-sided midfielder and we don't have anyone," Novo told the Sunday Mail.

"We have Charlie Adam but he's left-sided just like Kevin Thomson so we need someone else.

Injuries

"We've picked up a few injuries and there aren't many players left. DaMarcus Beasley and Barry have picked up knocks and are important players.

"It's a big squad and we'll do everything we can to compensate because we need to be ready for the European qualifiers.

Rangers fans must buy tickets directly from Falkirk
Who pays for the Old Firm ticket levy - the home club or the fans?

Falkirk managing director George Craig has told BBC Scotland that his club has rejected Rangers' proposed 5% handling fee to sell tickets for away matches.

The Old Firm consider the levy a means of recouping administration costs for distributing tickets to their own fans.

"We weren't prepared to pay the 5% for the service that would be provided by Rangers, so we just had to get on and ... Read more »
