Ian Murray has returned to Hibernian on a short-term deal until the end of the season after terminating his contract at Norwich City.

The 26-year-old left Easter Road in the summer of 2005 to join Rangers under freedom of contract.

The versatile player moved to Norwich on a one-year deal in August but has made just 11 appearances this season.

A statement on the Hibs website says that they hope to complete Murray's registration on Friday.

Murray could then go straight into the squad for Saturday's Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

Falkirk and Brighton had expressed an interest in Murray, who can play in midfield or defence.

But Murray, capped six times for Scotland, has chosen to go back to his home city.

He began his Hibs career in 1999, making his debut in January 2000, and going on to become club captain before his exit to Ibrox.

Murray was diagnosed with reactive arthritis after returning from Rangers' 2006 summer trip to South Africa and missed a large chunk of that season.
