Rangers defender David Weir
The experience of Weir will be crucial to Rangers at the back David Weir reckons keeping a clean sheet against Panathinaikos is the key to Rangers progressing in the Uefa Cup. Weir said: "Panathinaikos obviously know how valuable goals are and they will be coming here looking for goals. "The Aberdeen game showed that they are a quality team and that we will have to show them respect." The Greek side scored three times without reply when they met the Dons in Athens earlier in the tournament. "We know it's going to be a tough game and we know we have to perform on the night and over the two legs to progress," added Weir. Motherwell's twice-postponed match against Celtic in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League has been rescheduled for March 15.
Motherwell and Celtic had league fixtures against Rangers and Dundee United scheduled for that Saturday. However, those games were postponed after Rangers and United reached the CIS Insurance Cup final, which takes place the following day. The death of Phil O'Donnell in December prompted the first postponement of Motherwell's Fir Park clash with Celtic, which was set for January 2, while a waterlogged pitch caused the rearranged game on January 30 to be called off at late notice. Instead of both clubs having a free weekend in the middle of March, they have taken the opportunity to play each other. The SPL have also revealed new dates for two further rescheduled games involving Motherwell, with the home game against Inverness now set for February 20. The match had been set for January 26 but the Fir Park pitch was unplayable due to heavy rain ... Read more » |
Rangers striker Jean-Claude Darcheville must serve a three-game European ban after UEFA turned down the club's appeal against the punishment. The French forward was sent off in Rangers' Champions League match against Lyon on December 12 after stamping on Kim Kallstrom. Rangers lost the game 3-0 to miss out on a place in the group stages, and will resume their European campaign in the UEFA Cup with a last-32 clash against Panathinaikos. The Scottish league leaders hoped to see UEFA rethink their decision on the 32-year-old former Bordeaux striker's ban, but the initial suspension was upheld at a hearing in Nyon, Switzerland, on Thursday. Darcheville will miss the matches against Panathinaikos, on February 13 and February 21. He wi ... Read more » |

Butcher and Pressley join Scots
George Burley flanked by Terry Butcher (left) and Steven Pressley Burley has chosen Butcher (left) and Pressley as his assistants Terry Butcher and Steven Pressley have been confirmed as assistants to new Scotland manager George Burley. Former England captain Butcher was a team-mate of Burley's at Ipswich, while Pressley skippered Hearts during Burley's short reign at Tynecastle. Pressley insists he can add to his 32 caps but the Celtic defender has been used sparingly this season. He was not listed for this week's squad gathering at Loch Lomond but Burley will monitor Pressley's progress. "He'll be considered if he's playing regularly for his club and at a good level," said Burley of the 34-year-old. Rangers defender David Weir, three years older than Pressley, is among the 27-man pool assembled by Burley on Sunday for a three-day get-together. There were no new faces but Burley insists he will tinker with hi ... Read more » |
