1957-66 Celtic dominate early finals | ||||||||||||||
BBC Sport looks at previous Old Firm finals. Rangers and Celtic meet at Hampden on Sunday to contest the Co-operative Insurance Cup final. The Old Firm have met on 12 occasions in the League Cup final and its various guises. Rangers have won on eight occasions and Celtic on four. In the early Old Firm finals, Celtic had the upper hand, with wins in 1957, 1965 and 1966, while the Ibrox side won the 1964 League Cup final 2-1. Celtic's most famous victory was the 7-1 hammering of their oldest rivals in 1957. Jock Stein took over as Celtic manager in March 1965. The following month his side won the Scottish Cup, and in the October Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 for the League Cup. Bobby Lennox scored the only goal of the game in the 1966/67 final in what was to be a memorable season for Stein's side.
