No action is likely to be taken against Rangers as a result of rioting in Manchester city centre following Wednesday's Uefa Cup final.

Uefa has received the match delegate's report on the showpiece event.

And spokesman William Gaillard said: "Our disciplinary procedures only apply for events which occur at the stadium or within the perimeter."

But the governing body will review the pitch invasion by Zenit supporters and the stabbing of a Russian fan.

That remains under investigation by authorities in Manchester and Uefa will await further information before deciding on whether to impose any sanctions on the Ibrox club.

Zenit St Petersburg deservedly lifted the Uefa Cup with a two-goal victory over Rangers in Manchester.

The Russians dominated the first half without seriously threatening a packed Rangers defence.

Rangers' Jean-Claude Darcheville forced a good save and a Barry Ferguson snap shot struck the outside of a post.

But Denisov played a neat one-two with Andrei Arshavin before firing home and Konstatin Zyryanov side-footed in to secure Zenit's first European trophy.

It meant Rangers' dream of repeating their 1972 Cup-Winners' Cup success died at the hands of Zenit coach Dick Advocaat - the man dubbed the Little General during his time in charge at Ibrox.

And the Scottish side's hopes of winning four trophies by the end of the season had faltered at the second hurdle.

Rangers had been accused of playing "anti-football" during a miserly run to the final built on a solid defensive foundation.

And manager Walter Smith was not about to disappoint his critics - playing tw ... Read more »

Football fans who do not have tickets for the Uefa Cup final in Manchester next week will be able to watch the game on big screens around the city.

Up to 100,000 supporters are expected in the city for the Glasgow Rangers v Zenit St Petersburg match at the City of Manchester stadium on 14 May.

However, the stadium only has room for 47,000 spectators.

Screens will be sited in Piccadilly Gardens and Albert Square. There will be no screens at or near the stadium.

Uefa has allocated 13,000 tickets to Russian fans and a similar number to Rangers, although tens of thousands are still expected to make the trip from Glasgow.

Manchester City Council's spokesman on the city centre, Councillor Pat Karney, said: "In the light of Rangers qualifying for the final and the massive reported demand from fans for bigger and better provision, we've arranged for ... Read more »

Rangers manager Walter Smith has hinted at a more attacking approach for the first leg of their Uefa Cup quarter-final with Sporting Lisbon.

Rangers have progressed on the back of some stout defensive displays at Ibrox.

And Smith told the club website: "We have a way of playing that has been successful in knockout tournaments and we won't vary very much from that.

"But we know we may have to change the formation and tactics to try to cause Sporting problems."

Media conference: Rangers manager Walter Smith

Rangers kept clean sheets at home in the previous rounds against Panathinaikos and Werder Bremen.

And a solid 4-5-1 formation has served Smith well for much of the season as Rangers lead the SPL, having already picked up the CIS Insurance Cup.

"I don't think we could find a more difficult tie than the last round against Werder Bremen," Smith added.

"In both legs we had to work extremely hard.

"This time we hope we can cause Sporting more problems th ... Read more »
